It’s always interesting to check in from time to time and see who are the top 100 followed people on Twitter. Last time the 100 most followed people on Twitter included Barack Obama, Robert Scoble, and Kevin Rose.

This time I thought it would be fun to focus on who are the top 10 followed people on Twitter. Kevin Rose is still in the top 10, but President Obama is the second most followed person on Twitter and Britney Spears has made the list.

You might think to follow these people with the hopes that your tweets might get noticed. But consider this advice as an alternative.

When looking for people to follow on Twitter, first do a little keyword research on Search.Twitter.com and follow those people who express an interest in the keywords that you are targeting. Try to identify small but active tweeters. Smaller tweeters are more likely to notice what you tweet. People with lots of followers will be too busy to notice your tweets unless they see you because of someone else they already follow.

If you’re interested in following people related to the most followed list, then try following the people that follow the people on the top 100 most followed list. A good tool for discovering Twitter friend connections is TweetWheel. Just enter the Twitter name of the person you want to research and TweetWheel will give you a visual representation of the person’s connections.

Who knows, if you make the right connections, and offer enough reason for people to follow you, maybe some day you’ll make the list of 100 most followed people on Twitter. Maybe you can get Britney to give up her spot.
