Tony Cecala at WordCamp Dallas 2009
Tony Cecala gave the opening talk about how to turbo charge your career using WordPress. He highlighted the fact that it wasn’t that long ago that we were limited by the amount of information we could consume because we were limited by the number of available information sources and the format those sources provided.
These days however, we are all learning at an accelerated pace and this is opening up all sorts of brand new opportunities. Also, our ability to produce information has changed and we are able to interact socially in ways that have never existed before.
Tony gave a good talk, but the one thing he said that I disagree with is that Facebook won’t help you broadcast your message to the world. That is only partly true.
There are 6 billion people in the world and while some of those people live in grass huts, most of them are online. Of the population that is online some people use only email, some also use twitter, some are Facebook and email only.
The bigger question is should you be trying to reach evetyone and dilute your message or should you narrow your focus to a very targeted audience who is passionate about what you do.
The answer is, if your audience uses Facebook, then you are broadcasting you message to the portion of the world that matters to you. If not, then you are selling air conditioners to Eskimos.
There are plenty of WordPress plugins for social media so write for your WordPress blog, but don’t forget to leverage social media to build traffic and relationship with your audience. Remember, people buy from people and that is an important concept to grasp.
