Defining Your Major Definite Purpose

Let’s be honest with each other, do you really know what you’d do with your time if you didn’t have to worry about money? Have you truly invisioned your life as you want it to be or do you find yourself just considering your immediate desires, like money?

Most people say they want to be their own boss or make lots of money, but for what purpose? If they had more money than they needed and didn’t have to worry about bosses or time clocks, how would they then fullfil their sense of purpose in their lives? What lays beyond you and your current state of existence?

If time and money were not an issue, how would you occupy your days? Maybe you’d like to travel, write a book, collaborate with other people, or do nothing at all. Maybe you’d spend your days laying on the beach or volunteering with a charity.

Don’t worry about what other people might think of your choices. There isn’t a right or wrong answer so long as you’re honest with yourself about what you would really do and why you’d do it.

One of the least productive aspects of running your own business is not knowing why you’re really doing something. You may say you want one thing, but your actions don’t match up with your words. Have you ever experienced this in your life, business or personal?

This kind of disconnect can cause you to waste a lot of valuable time or worse. It can end up frustrating you to the point where you might decide to quite whatever you’re doing.

Fortunately, life doesn’t have to be that difficult. There is a way to get a clear mental picture of what you really want in life so that you don’t sabatage yourself along the way. The key is to clearly define your major definite purpose.

Reflecting on your goals helps you gain focus and momentum and when you actually write down your goals you move them from the fluid and intangible to the tangible and concrete.

If you want to get your life in order and move closer to achieving your goals, take out a piece of paper right now and write down the goals that come to mind.

For now, don’t worry about making sense or putting things in order. Just get all the goals you’ve ever considered out on paper. Later you can go back and evaluate your thoughts and put them in some sort of order by priority.

Ultimately you will need to choose a definite major purpose that will be the focal point for all your activities. But for now, you’re just trying to capture your thoughts on paper. I call this, “Getting my hamster off the wheel.”

Here are some guidelines to consider when you do decide to define your Major Definite Purpose.

Once you’ve dumped your thoughts on to paper, take time to review this list and think honestly about what you really want to achieve right now. Write down what you believe to be your driving purpose in life. Take as much time as you need to really consider what you want.

Next time we’ll look at some specific questions to help you refine your goals even further. Personal growth and development is extremely important and it takes time to learn, absorb, and implement. Take your time and don’t rush through the process.

Here are a few additional audio books I recommend on personal growth:

  • The Science of Getting Rich (by Wallace D. Wattles) – This is a foundational piece of literature that will help you understand how to focus your mind so that you can achieve your goals.
  • Think and Grow Rich (by Napoleon Hill) – Napolean Hill is considered one of the greatest minds in terms of achieving success and his advice is as relevant today as it was when you wrote it back during the beginning of the industrial revolution.
  • The Solution (by Joe Vitale) – This short audio summarizes some of the key points for clearing your mind of distractions and resetting your focus toward positive results. Whether you are looking for business answers or personal advice, this material will send you in the right direction.

If you’re an auditory learner like I am, you might want to buy these books in audiobook format from Audible.com. As a member of Audible, I save at least $10 per book when I use my Audible credits to make a purchase.

    • I agree Edward. Our thoughts are a pretty fluid thing. We can have complete clarity on something, but then lose sight of it later. I know I’ve been afflicted by that fact many times.

I’m glad you liked the article.

By the way, I like your skydiving picture. It looks like you were having a great time.
