Summary: Learn how to use Google alerts to keep up on how fast your content is indexed with Google.
The rate at which content is indexed into search engines these days is amazing. I have been tracking some of my websites and I can tell my new content is being picked up within a few hours of it being posted to the website. In some instances it has been within an hour. That is a fantastic turn around.
It also means that I can keep an eye on my search engine activity. This helps me know what is being indexed and what is not. It also gives me a pulse on when a search engine like Google has started indexing my content, if it hasn’t already started.
But you are probably asking, “How can I do that too”. Well, I am about to tell you exactly how I do it for FREE! I know, I’m such a nice guy, huh?
Here is how you do it. You use Google Alerts. Google Alerts allows you to get emails automatically sent to you when there are new Google results for your search terms. In fact, there are currently alerts with results for News, Web, Blogs, and Groups. What this means is that you can setup an alert for a specific search term, say “American Idol winner” and any time something new is indexed by Google about American Idol winners you will get an email notification. This can be extremely useful if you use it for search terms that are relevant to you and your business.
I know, your thinking you’re setting yourself up for an inbox full of alerts. No, not at all. In fact Google lets you set how often you want alerts sent to you. I recommend the “As it happens” option if you are trying to monitor when new content is being picked up off your websites. By choosing this option you can measure the time between when you post your content and when Google alerts you that something new has been added. There is also a side benefit to using Google alerts and that is you can keep track of the other content that is either related to you or your business or you can monitor what others are saying about you, your products, or services. This is valuable business intelligence and Google is handing it over to you for FREE!
So, if you are interested in knowing when your content is being indexed by Google, what others are saying about your keywords, or what your online presence is doing behind your back, then Google alerts are a great way to collect value information.
Keep reaching for Success,
