Blogging Gear from WordCamp Dallas 2008

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On March - 29 - 2008

WordCamp Dallas 2008Here is a short list of items that I took to WordCamp Dallas 2008 to document the event and post updates to the web. Of course, the list doesn’t include cables and adapters, but for the most part every thing I carried fit into a single school size backpack, including the 160 GB external mobile hard drive I carry for video editing.

Here’s the list:

  1. iPhone for taking pictures, emailing, twittering, and uploading images.
  2. MacBook for everything and it’s cool.
  3. Wireless Device for a backup Internet connection (open WiFi was provided).
  4. JVC Everio Digital Camcorder for live video capture and picture taking.
  5. Twitterific for posting updates.
  6. WordPress Blog for posting updates.
  7. Jott.com for short mobile updates when typing is too much of a hassle.
  8. Open Source Marketer Ning Community for image posting and keeping the community up to date.

You might be thinking, why in the world does he need all of these things and how could he possibly use all of them. The short answer is I didn’t use them all at the same time and maybe it was overkill, but what I planned for was to be over prepared. Bloggers and the average joe have become the reporters and press of this generation and if you want to be serious you have to take things seriously.

WordsPress Review From WordCamp Dallas 2008

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On March - 29 - 2008

WordCamp Dallas 2008Here are some of the new announcements from the WordCamp Dallas 2008 event here in Frisco Texas.

Not only is WordPress.org getting a refresh, but WordPress 2.5 was also released today.

Media Management:

Media upload is totally redesigned with the ability to upload multiple items at one time.

Image Handling:

You can tag your images on your desktop and then upload them to WordPress and it will pull out the image information automatically so you don’t have to re-enter the information.

Plugins:

Plugins can be automatically updated without the need to manually download the files and upload them to your server. Whether this works or not will depend on your server settings.

Pluggable Features:

WordPress 2.5 has several interesting new pluggable features. Everything from color schemes to post creation tool bar buttons is pluggable in WP 2.5.

Hacking Prevention:

All WordPress 2.5 passwords are now salted and stretched to prevent hacking. Before the security was a straight MD5 Hash. What hackers used to do was to hack an old WordPress blog and then download the user database so that even if the blogger updated their WordPress instance, the hackers could still get back in. So, update to WP 2.5, keep your blog updated, and just for good measure, always always change your username and password if you get hacked. Hopefully the new WP security will help prevent hacking.

WordPress 2.6 Future Vision:

The growth of WordPress since 2006 has been virtually exponential. Both the user community and the develop community continues to grow and as it does we can only expect for it to become more entrenched in the lexicon of publishing online. WorPress is being used as The blogging platform of choice and it’s being used as the foundation for CMS systems.

Let’s Meet Up At WordCamp Dallas This Weekend!

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On March - 26 - 2008

WordCamp DallasYou may have heard about the South By SouthWest event down in Austin Texas. It was a week long event that has historically been a music related event, but has added topics around blogging and media.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend, but I heard a lot of popular blogging names were there. It would have been a great chance to mix it up with other motivated people because getting to know people face to face will always be a great way to build solid long term relationships.

I really enjoy talking with focused like minded people so, you can imagine how excited I am about attending WordCamp this weekend in Frisco, Texas. The blogging event has been on my calendar for a couple of months now and at last glance, 130 bloggers are registered to attend.

In case you haven’t heard of the event, it is a two day WordPress blogging event that focuses on blog reader and developer topics.

Over the two days we are scheduled to talk about topics like WordPress 2.5, how to handle content theft, building blogging influence, seo for bloggers, the business of blogging, and testing with WordPress.

Lorelle VanFossen is scheduled to deliver some of the material related to WordPress Power Tips. Her blog has been a great source of information for me as I’ve tweaked my WordPress blog from it’s original template to what you see today.

Her blog was especially helpful when I upgraded to WordPress 2.3, so I’m hoping for an opportunity to personally thank her for the great information she provides on her blog.

Overall it promises to be a great two days. I plan to report live from the event and I’ll be posting pictures to the Open Source Marketer Community. So be sure to look for those starting this Saturday.

If there is an event in your area or a major event that you can plan to attend, then I highly recommend that you plan to be there. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and make friends with people that I wouldn’t have had access to otherwise by attending events. Even free events have been a good source for making contacts.

For the most part people are very open at these events because they are there to meet other people and share information too. So, if you’ve ever wondered how you can meet people within your industry, attending events is a great way to make those connections.

If you’re in the Dallas area this weekend and would like to attend a blogging event, then there’s still time to register. If you already plan to attend, then look me up while you’re there and we can sit and have a coffee together. I hope to see you there.

Going to camp,

Blog Promotion Using The BlogCatalog Social Dashboard

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On February - 19 - 2008

BlogCatalog HomepageWhat would happen if your newest post was Dugg and all your friends at BlogCatalog knew about it? And then what would happen if they Dugg it too, letting all of their friends know it. That would be pretty powerful, right?

That was the first few lines of an email that was sent out by the BlogCatalog Team at 3:30 this morning where they announced they will be adding a social dashboard to the BlogCatalog community. This dashboard will allow BlogCatalog members keep up with social contacts. When a friend uploads a new Flickr photo or submit a new article to Digg, you’ll know and then you’ll be able to share it with your network.

The email went on to say:

“In the next couple of days, BlogCatalog is launching Social Dashboard beta, a new feature that displays your latest activities across many social networks — Digg, Flickr, Last.fm, Twitter, YouTube, and many others. That means automatic cross-networking and promotion right from your personal profile page. It also means that the your post updates, Twitter comments, Digg submissions, and other activities will appear on the Social Dashboard of all your BlogCatalog friends, and maybe their friends too. This is the kind of networking that can make posts go viral. And that’s just for starters.”

BlogCatalog is counting that the dashboard will give other members a reason to visit your profile page where they’ll be able to check for blog updates, Twitter messages, Flickr photo updates, Digg submissions, your YouTube videos and whatever else you might want to share. And by sharing with them, your network might share with their friends.

The email also goes on to suggest that you use the BlogCatalog Social Dashboard to promote your own activities. I find this particularly interesting because I am noticing more and more tools popping up that allow you to leverage multiple social bookmarking sites and to exchange traffic using those sites.

This trend should continue to increase as the number and popularity of social sites increases. Remember, social bookmarking slash social networking sites are all still relatively young and there is much more opportunity and room for maturing on the horizon.

BlogCatalog is already a great social networking site for the blogging community, so it’s interesting to watch as social networks leverage other social networks to boost traffic, engage members, and effectively push for a competitive edge in the market.

Sites like StumbleUpon and Digg will have to start thinking about how to navigate in these interconnected environments to preserve their relevancy and offer value to their members.

Already sites like SUExchange.com and SocialMarker.com are pushing the bookmarking sites off course slightly by creating a secondary marketing of link exchanging and traffic swapping. The social sites might not like it, but the reality is they can’t stop it.

As for BlogCatalog, this is really just a natural progression because they already offer the ability to link your BlogCatalog profile to your other social profiles. But this could definitely step things up a notch by pulling the social networks into a place where the members benefit from promoting each others links and social connections.

Check out the Open Source Marketer BlogCatalog Profile for a good example of a profile that is connected to other social networks.

BlogCatalog has been a good place for me to get ranking in the search engines and the increased blog surface area on their site has helped to bring traffic to my site in the past. You can see how the Open Source Marketer blog posts are pulled into the BlogCatalog profile page which increases your blog exposure. I can’t wait to see what value the social dashboard will add.

According to the email, they’ll be rolling out a beta version in the next few days.

The BlogCatalog Team is asking for feedback after the initial launch so be sure to let them know what you think. And don’t worry. If you don’t like the new features, you will be able to opt, but I don’t think you will.

What do you think about the BlogCatalog announcement? What social tools do you use?

Watching and waiting,

Getting Inspiration From Others

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On January - 15 - 2008

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.netFinding inspiration, and sometimes motivation, to continue blogging can be a challenge even for the most committed blogger. So it’s important to find inspiration, and yes motivation, any where you can. Like take ProBlogger in the Wall Street Journal for instance. Recently Darren Rowse was featured the business section of WSJ online. He was even quoted.

Now don’t get me wrong, the success of his blog is not defined by whether or not he gets quoted in a major publication. To be sure he is quoted everyday on his own blog that reaches thousands, if not millions, of people around the world. But, being featured in WSJ online is a great sign that blogging, and bloggers in general, are being slowly absorbed into the media conversation as someone to pay attention to.

This is fantastic for bloggers and Internet Marketing in general because as blogs and celebrity bloggers draw more attention to making money online, then more and more people will come online looking to get even a little slice of that golden pie.

The annual salary that Darren claims, along with the other annual numbers quoted by other bloggers, is getting people’s attention for sure. In fact, I would argue that people still under estimate the true earning potential online.

Just as we like to under estimate the amount of change a technology will bring and over estimate the amount of time it will take for that change to occur, so are we limited in seeing from here how much upside there still is in making money online.

Blogging is one such method that continues to prove itself out. But, just like any business there are many who will not successfully establish themselves as players in the market. There are no guarantees. But if we just hold on and ride the back of the bear, then even if we don’t find ourselves listed in the halls of the Wall Street Journal, then at least we might get linked to from enough people to keep the affiliate checks flowing.

Inspiration Seeking,

Charles McKeever

P.S. Blogging is just one such method of making money online. Be sure to keep an eye for the series I am writing on how to build niche websites that make money while you sleep….okay, I know how cheezy that sounds, but I am doing it with several niche sites and if I can do it you can too (okay, cheezy again, but true).

Brian Clark’s BlogTalkRadio Interview

Posted by OpenSourceMarketer On January - 11 - 2008

earbuds.jpgYesterday, Brian Clark over at CopyBlogger.com gave an extremely informative interview on BlogTalkRadio’s Alan Levy Show. Brian talked about his background in blogging and marketing online and he also makes some highly interesting comments about where he thinks blogging and marketing online are headed.

You can listen to Brian Clark’s BlogTalkRadio interview now to hear what he had to say.

Brian is an extremely active voice within the blogging and online marketing community and just like his blog writing, he is very direct and to the point in the BlogTalkRadio interview.

For anyone who doesn’t know, CopyBlogger is the defacto blog on good copy writing. As an online resource it rivals most printed copy writing books as a resource for learning good copy skills. I’ve been following his blog for about a year now and it has been a very sharp resource for quick hitting writing advice and an encouragement for creating crisp blog content.

If you don’t already follow his blog, you can find more details at CopyBlogger.com where you will find a wealth of information on copy writing and communication.

Learning everyday,
